Chlorpyrifos, a widely used pesticide in agriculture, is chemically known as Chlorpyrifos, also known as chlorpyrifos, termiticide, or lexapro. As a moderately toxic organophosphorus pesticide, chlorpyrifos plays an important role in ensuring crop safety and improving agricultural productivity, but its potential environmental and health risks should not be ignored.
Physical and chemical properties and characteristics
The molecular formula of chlorpyrifos is C9H11Cl3NO3PS, molecular weight is 350.59, it is a kind of white crystal with a faint thiol odor. It has good solubility in most organic solvents but very low water solubility, a property that makes it persistent in the environment. The melting point of chlorpyrifos is about 42.5-43 degrees Celsius, and the boiling point is about 200 degrees Celsius. It has high volatility in soil, and is non-sorbent and broad-spectrum insecticidal and acaricidal.

Chlorpyrifos mainly inhibits the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) or cholinesterase (ChE) in the body's nerve tissues, destroying the normal nerve impulse conduction, so as to achieve insecticidal effect. This mechanism makes it a powerful touch, stomach and fumigation agent against a wide range of chewing and stinging pests. In agriculture, chlorpyrifos is widely used for pest control of rice, wheat, cotton, fruit trees, vegetables and other crops, especially for underground pests. In addition, it is also used as a hygienic insecticide for the control of termites and cockroaches and other pests.

Because of its high efficiency and broad-spectrum insecticidal characteristics, chlorpyrifos has been widely used in the world. Especially in developing countries, chlorpyrifos has become the pesticide of choice for many farmers due to its relatively low economic cost. However, with the increasing awareness of environmental protection and health, many developed countries have begun to restrict or ban the use of chlorpyrifos. For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a ban on the use of chlorpyrifos in U.S. homes and yards as early as 2000, and New Zealand and other countries have also taken similar measures. Nevertheless, chlorpyrifos is still one of the major agricultural pesticides in most developing countries.
Environmental impacts and ecological risks
The extensive use of chlorpyrifos inevitably brings about the problem of environmental pollution.
