Pesticide Toxicity Classification Criteria

Release time:Sep 19,2024

Pesticide toxicity classification criteria usually categorize pesticides into five classes: highly toxic, highly toxic, poisonous, low toxicity and slightly toxic. The specific grading standards are as follows:

Highly toxic: the lethal dose (LD50) is less than 5 mg/kg body weight.
Highly toxic: LD50 between 5 mg/kg body weight and 50 mg/kg body weight.
Toxic: LD50 between 50 mg/kg bw and 500 mg/kg bw.
Low toxicity: LD50 between 500 mg/kg bw and 5000 mg/kg bw.
Microtoxic: LD50 greater than 5000 mg/kg bw.
Specific criteria for each level
Highly toxic pesticides: e.g. monocrotophos, phosphamidon, methamidophos, etc.
Highly toxic pesticides: e.g. Furadan, Fluoroacetamide, Cyanide, Zinc Phosphide, Aluminum Phosphide, Arsenic, etc.
Poisonous pesticides: such as Rogaine, Leafhopper, Speedwell, Dioxon, pyrethroid pesticides and so on.
Low-toxicity pesticides: such as trichlorfon, insecticide double, malathion, phoxim, acephate, dimethyl tetrachloride, etc.
Microtoxic pesticides: such as carbendazim, chlorothalonil, etofenprox, zinc diclofenac, mycotoxin, simazine, etc.
The basis and practical application of toxicity grading standards
The toxicity classification standard of pesticides is mainly based on the lethal dose (LD50) or lethal concentration (LC50), the larger the LD50, the less toxic; on the contrary, the smaller the LD50, the greater the toxicity. Acute toxicity classification standards are based on the pesticide on the experimental animals (such as mice) to determine the LD50. For example, the LD50 for highly toxic pesticides is less than 5 mg/kg body weight, the LD50 for highly toxic pesticides is between 5 mg/kg body weight and 50 mg/kg body weight, and so on.
